IntroductionThe BMW X5 was introduced in 2000 as the automaker’s first “Sport Activity Vehicle” (SAV). In contrast to the traditional sport utility vehicle (SUV) that delivered utility and off-road prowess, BMW’s X5 was engineered for premium handling, performance, efficiency, practicality and versatility. The early X5 carried up to 5 passengers in sophisticated luxury and it offered standard full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) for control during inclement weather and to deliver car-like handling. In 2002, BMW released its high-performance X5 4.6is model. With a 4.6-liter V-8 engine rated at 340 horsepower (later bumped to 4.8 liters), 20-inch wheels, performance components and tuning, it was built to compete directly against the high-performance Mercedes-Benz ML55. The enthusiast-targeted 4.8is model was dropped in 2007 when the completely redesigned second-generation X5 debuted. The all-new BMW X5 was slightly larger than its predecessor and it addressed the limited cabin space of the previous model as it offered optional seating for up to 7 passengers. BMW offered the redesigned X5 with a choice of two engines: a 3.0-liter inline-6 rated at 260 horsepower or an optional 4.8-liter V-8 rated at 350 horsepower. Both models were available with a “Sport Package” which included larger wheels and tires and mildly-tuned sport suspension, but it was hardly track-ready.New for 2010, BMW has announced its highest-performing X5 model ever: the purpose-built X5 M. Reviving the enthusiast-oriented passion of the defunct 4.8is model, the all-new X5 M is fitted with a powerful engine, oversize wheels, track suspension, body kit, and other cosmetic upgrades. With every 2010 X5 M, BMW provides a 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty and a 4-year/unlimited mileage membership in the BMW Assist Safety Plan. The BMW Maintenance Program includes all factory-recommended maintenance items for the first 4-year/50,000-mile period of ownership.
